Azurite is a soft, deep-blue copper mineral produced by weathering of copper ore deposits. Azurite stone has been known about since ancient times, and its name comes from an old Persian word that means ‘blue colour’. Although it may occur as crystals, it is more commonly found as a rough stone. It is a copper based stone which is commonly found in copper mines. This blue stone has been found in a large number of locations, including Egypt, Namibia, Russia, France, Australia, Peru, Chile and the USA. It often occurs naturally combined with other copper based stones, including with Malachite, Shattuckite, Eilat Stone, Chrysocolla and Cuprite. This stone is the birthstone for the month May.
