Purpurite is named after Latin “purpura” – purple, referring to its colour. Purpurite has a striking colour and it would be very popular as a gemstone, if it were not such a rarity. Purpurite is a beautiful purple stone that is transparent to opaque with a vitreous to sub metallic lustre. It is primarily found in Namibia, but also in Australia, USA and France.
